Ākonga at Haeata Community Campus are provided the skills and knowledge to carve out their own learning pathway whilst at school and in their future careers. Our focus is on ensuring ākonga leave with the necessary skills to go into further study, start their first job or to explore the world.
To do this our Year 9/10 curriculum has been designed in three parts:
Puna Ako – Is their home room class, their Puna Ako kaiako will follow them from Year 9 to Year 13 meaning a strong relationship is formed between kaiako, ākonga and whānau.
Kaupapa Ako – Refers to the core knowledge required to be successful in future years. Ākonga are in these classes for the whole year. At Haeata the following are Kaupapa Ako learning areas: English, Mathematics, Science, Physical Education and Health.
Rākaihaututanga – This is the option based course which runs for a semester (Two Terms). Ākonga pick their options at the beginning of the year for the two semesters. At Haeata the following are Rākaihaututanga learning areas: The Arts, Technology, Social Sciences, Languages.
Kōrepo refers to a shallow lagoon or wetlands, it symbolises at Year 9/10 ākonga go through many challenges.
In the senior years, ākonga are encouraged to explore their future pathways with the range of opportunities, either through classes offered onsite or provided through our external providers.
All ākonga in the senior school, work with our academic kaiarahi to develop their personalised learning plan to help them navigate their pathway from school to work and/or teritary education. Ākonga are provided with a wide range of subjects that ensures we are meeting the requirements they have for their future pathways.
We are very fortunate to have close bonds with the University of Canterbury, Te Pūkenga (ARA) and other tertiary providers in Canterbury and New Zealand. Ākonga in Year 12-13 are offered Dual Enrolment opportunities which allows them to step out into Tertiary education but also spend 3-4 days at school. Alongside this some ākonga take advantage of our GATEWAY programs. At Year 11-13 the focus remains on supporting our Rangatahi to formulate their future pathway and ensure that we have strengthened it with the skills and knowledge needed to be successful in whatever pathway they choose.
At Haeata Community Campus, we offer a range of special programmes that have been designed to allow our ākonga a variety of pathway options for their future. All of the programmes are high interest and utilise the state of the art facilities Haeata Community Campus offers.
These are all delivered by our specialised Kaiako and is our point of difference. These programmes all offer NCEA credits from Level 1-3 through a range of Unit and Achievement Standards.
