Teaching/Ako & Learning
(Year 1-5)
Hikuawa hapori is our youngest ākonga from Years 1 – 6
Puna Ako classes are based on the ākonga Year Level, although some of the Puna Ako are composite classes with a mixture of year levels. Hikuawa learns in English medium, following the New Zealand Curriculum and the local Haeata Curriculum.
There are three main components to the Learning Programme:
Puna Ako time supports ākonga to develop social and emotional skills as they adapt to learning at school. The Puna Ako Kaiako is the main contact person for you ākonga. Haeata school values and Mātāpono underpin learning in Puna Ako and these are taught through Mauri Tau (daily karakia, waiata & pānui) Our Haeata tīkanga and routines are taught so ākonga learn what is expected of them at school. We use the Mana Potential Framework to check in with how ākonga are feeling and to support positive relationships and development of interpersonal skills.
Kaupapa Ako is about literacy and numeracy. Ākonga are taught reading, writing, and maths. Learning in station-based activities which include worksheets, games, and creative tasks. Reading, writing, and maths
Teaching/Ako & Learning
(Year 6-8)
Rākaihautūtanga is about the integrated curriculum where ākonga inquire into one big idea that is shared across the hapori for the term. This covers the New Zealand Curriculum which is underpinned by a te ao Māori perspective. In English, Mathematics, Science, The Arts, Technology, Health and Physical Education, and Social Sciences. Including the cultural narrative and local curriculum. Rākaihautūtanga is an opportunity for our ākonga to pick up their own kō to explore and drive their learning by participating in workshops and inquiry-based projects.
