The staff teach about “living in the moment” and “not stressing about things you cannot change”. Describing the experience, PJ says: “They drop you off at night, so I just focused on what I needed to do to get set up and then getting to sleep as soon as possible.” While on his own, he thought about all the good things in his life that weren’t with him there, particularly his family. “I missed my nephew a lot.” It was hard to say goodbye to his watchmates but good to be home, and his family has noticed a change – they say he’s more patient.

What would he say to others interested in Outward Bound? “Just do it, live in the moment,” PJ says.

Achieving NCEA at Haeata Community Campus

Just like students around the country, Haeata Community Campus students Manaia Mahuika-Davies and Bodie Barker gained NCEA Level 1 last year, but unlike most of those other students they also gained credits at other levels too.Things are different at Haeata. This grew out of an essay she wrote at the beginning of last year, for which she gained science credits.

Bodie achieved both Level 1 and Level 2 last year in maths, English and a sports and nutrition course at Ara, as well as a barista course. This year he is taking up various opportunities through Haeata, including a New Zealand Institute of Sport course on personal training, and developing his skills as a barista. His goal for the year is to achieve NCEA Level 3.

Achieving NCEA Level 3 is also Manaia’s big goal for this year, which would allow her to spend next year working and saving. She then hopes to go to university to study marine biology so that ultimately she can “help save the dolphins”.

Manaia’s study pathway typifies Haeata’s approach of encouraging its students to set a big goal and then work at it in smaller parts. “We have a weekly goal, term goal and a year goal,” Manaia says. “We focus on the weekly goal to get to the year goal.”

The approach brings particular challenges but also rewards. “You have to push yourself and be positive about it,” Manaia says. “But you learn how to do the research yourself, instead of always relying on the teacher to help. And you learn to ask others for help too.”

Bodie loves the opportunity to develop his passions and manage his own time. “I have a goal each day, so that I know I’m on track with my work, and I have the freedom to get experience in other areas while still managing my own workload,” he says.

Haeata provides many opportunities for students to engage outside the classroom. Manaia and Bodie have both been involved with the Student Volunteer Army, and the Red Shirts programme run by The Warehouse. These experiences help to widen students’ perspectives and expose them to options for after they finish school.

Instead of preparing students to head out into one job or one career path, the research-based modern learning model prepares students for a rapidly changing world and jobs that may not even exist yet.

Students pitch in to help Christchurch community

The walkway off Catherine Street in Woolston, beside the Heathcote river, has been revitalised with help from some of our Year 12 students and the University of Canterbury (UC) Student Volunteer Army (SVA).In March, our students; Bodie, Manaia and Troy; alongside the UC SVA and other year 12s from local schools, revitalised an 80 metre section of fencing as part of the SVA’s Year 12 UCan programme. Over two mornings the group first painted over graffiti and then, with the aid of a local artist, took to adding colourful imagery to the area, which is often used by locals as a riverside walking area.

The UCan Year 12 programme encourages local secondary students to become leaders in their communities through volunteering while being mentored by SVA members. Along with getting out and being making a different in the community, the Year 12 students also got to learn more about the SVA, how it was founded, and the work it continues to do in the community. The students also were tasked with coming up with a project idea that they would like to implement within their own school and community before pitching it to a panel consisting of representatives from the university and SVA.

Josh Blackmore, SVA President and one of the judges of the presentations was impressed with what he saw. “The quality of ideas generated in such a short space of time was highly impressive. Teams presented well thought out plans that took advantage of their own skills and networks to address needs they saw in their communities. We wish the students all the best in their mission to implement their project plans, and look forward to hearing how they go.”

Ihutai Service Day

Service is one of our values at Haeata. PJ shared about his recent trip to Samoa for the first time. We celebrated student's excellence in dispositional learning and sport and cultural achievement. A panel of past Aranui students shared with us what being Pasifika means to them. And of course we finished up with food and conversation, building connections amongst us all.

Thank you for spending the evening with us at Haeata, we can't wait to see you at the next Pasifika Fono on 12th June.
